Franklin County passes resolution against flavored tobacco

Franklin County commissioners have passed a resolution asking local stores to stop carrying flavored tobacco.

Flavored tobacco is generally chewing tobacco or dip which has been flavored to make it more appealing to children.

In many cases the tobacco has added flavors like candy or fruit.

In 2008 Franklin County had one of the highest rates of flavored tobacco use by children in the state, though that number has fallen substantially since then because of an ongoing education campaign by the “Students Working Against Tobacco” program.

Close to 30 members of the group from the Apalachicola Bay Charter School and the Franklin County School, including the entire cheerleading squad, came to the commission meeting Tuesday to explain to commissioners why nicotine is a dangerous drug.

The county commission was more than happy to throw its support behind the move.

In doing so they joined 26 other counties which have already adopted the resolution including Gulf and Wakulla counties.

The city of Apalachicola has also adopted the resolution against flavored tobacco, and the SWAT team is heading to Carrabelle next.
