Shrimpers and crabbers working in the Gulf of Mexico may be able to get more compensation because of
the BP oil spill.
The Gulf oil spill claims czar Kenneth Feinberg announced Wednesday that it will double compensation payments for shrimpers and crabbers.
Until this week, shrimpers and crabbers
were eligible for double their 2010 losses, but because of continued
uncertainty about the impact of the oil spill on those fisheries, shrimpers and
crabbers can now get 4 times their 2010 losses.
The changes recognize that there may be a
greater economic impact on shrimpers and crabbers than on tourism-related
businesses, something industry leaders have been complaining about for months.
