2011 was a bad year for Florida’s
manatees.
453
manatees were found dead in Florida
waters in 2011 – that’s the second highest on record. Many of them died in a severe cold snap in January – 112 died during various cold snaps last year.
In fact the past three years have been tough for the protected species; biologists documented a record 766 manatee deaths in 2010 and recorded the third-highest total of 429 in 2009.
If you would like to help Florida’s manatees you can easily do so by purchasing the manatee specialty license plate, available at county tax collectors’ offices.
The funds collected for these plates go directly to manatee research and conservation.
To report a dead or distressed manatee, call the FWC’s Wildlife Alert Hotline at 888-404-FWCC (3922).
