Conserve water in April (and all year long)

April is water conservation month and the Northwest Florida water management District is urging all residents to cut water usage wherever they can.

Northwest Florida is currently facing drought conditions and the district has a water shortage warning order in effect due to declining ground and surface water resources and increased use due to drought.

Several surface water sites are below normal to much below normal, and several ground water sites are at record lows.

The U.S. Drought Monitor indicates moderate drought conditions in counties west of the St. Marks River and severe drought in Jackson County

Some of the ways the District says people can reduce their water usage is to limit outdoor watering to no more than two days per week and then water only
during the low evaporation hours of 5 p.m. to 10 a.m.

Reduce recreation if it requires pumping, diverting or otherwise using water supply—such as filling duck ponds and stop aesthetic uses of water that are primarily decorative (such as fountains).
