Florida department of Health seeing an increase in Whooping Cough

The Florida Department of Health is advising parents to make sure their children are properly immunized against pertussis – better known as Whooping Cough.
They also advise new parents, grandparents and relatives to get fully immunized before being around an infant.
A typical case of pertussis starts with a cough, runny nose, sneezing and a low-grade fever.
After 1-2 weeks, the coughing becomes more severe.
Since January 1st, The Department of Health has identified 112 confirmed and probable cases of Whooping Cough, with at least one case in twenty-two Florida counties including one case in Gulf County and one in Leon County.
Health officials say Florida is not alone in seeing an increase in whooping cough – they are seeing the numbers grow around the country.
If you have questions on where to get your immunizations, contact your local county health department or other local health care provider.
