Volunteers needed to serve as beach stewards

Shorebirds are beginning to nest on Franklin County beaches and volunteers are now needed to serve as beach stewards.
Snowy plovers already have nests and soon will have their first chicks.
Terns and skimmers will also be nesting very soon.
Unknowing beachgoers can trample eggs and chicks, or they can flush parents from the nests leaving the eggs and chicks vulnerable to the hot sun and predators.
That’s why the beach steward program is so important
The beach steward program is done through the Audubon of Florida.
People who take part get to spend a few hours or more on the beach during the nesting season to protect the birds from disturbance and to educate the public about the birds.
An Opening Day training session will be held at the Sugar Hill Beach Area at the St. George Island State Park on April the 11th from 10 till noon.
You do need to reserve a spot.
That can be done by contacting Alan knothe by e-mail at aknothe@audubon.org or by phone at 850-710-6331.
