Drinking water Protection Continues with District Water Monitoring Funding
From the Northwest Florida Water Management District
Havana, FL—Drinking water protection continues to be a priority of the Northwest Florida Water
Management District Governing Board. On June 21, the Governing Board accepted $188,012.39 to continue the Integrated Water Resources Monitoring Program, which monitors water quality in northwest Florida’s aquifers, streams, rivers, ponds and lakes.
“Since the program’s inception in the 1980s, District scientists have established ground and surface water sampling sites across 16 counties and produced a significant water quality assessment tool,” said Guy Gowens, Director of the Division of Resource Management.
“The bottom line is this data helps us notify people when well water doesn‘t meet drinking water standards,” said Executive Director Jon Steverson. “Dissolved sodium chloride and nitrate, for instance, can contaminate water wells and result in levels harmful to human health. If we find a problem, we can help people find safe alternatives.”
