Franklin County re-applies for state historic grant

Franklin County said it will re-apply for a Historic Preservation grant from the state to do some much needed upgrades to the Armory in Apalachicola.

The county has applied for the money from the Florida Division of Historic Resources for the past 4 years but state budget cuts have kept the application from being funded.

The county said it has no idea whether the program will be funded next year either but it will optimistically put in an application.

The county is seeking 350 thousand dollars to help fix the armory’s leaky roof, upgrade wiring, renovate the kitchen and possibly air-condition the building.

Much of the needed work is already being covered by Tourist Development money, and this grant would pay for additional work that needs to be done to the 110 year old building.

The National Guard Armory since 2004, is generally used now for private events like weddings and concerts.
