The Franklin
county commission has agreed to spend 35 thousand dollars for a reshelling
program on Friday, August the 10th.
Reshelling allows oystermen to move clean oyster shells to
various bars around the bay to give the spat a place to attach and make the
bars more productive.
The county will front the money to the Franklin
County Seafood Workers Association
which will administer the program and will then be reimbursed for the expense
by the Florida Department of Agriculture.
The Department of Agriculture has 112 thousand dollars to
spend on reshelling programs this year.
Seafood Worker Association President Shannon Hartsfield said
224 oyster harvesters have already registered to take part in the reshelling
program and he expects a few more will sign up at the next Association meeting
on July 30th at the Eastpoint fire House.
They plan to do the reshelling from the two locations – one
in Eastpoint and one at the Lombardi site in Apalachicola .
Oystermen will earn 125 dollars for each boatload of shell
they carry.
