Search for an FBO at the Apalachicola airport continues

County commissioners opened bids last week for a fixed base operator at the Apalachicola airport.

The Fixed Base Operator provides necessary services at the airport like fueling, hangar rental, tie-down and parking.

In some cases they also provide aircraft rental, aircraft maintenance, and flight instruction.

The board has been looking for someone to provide the service for over a year – the contract for the previous FBO ended in May.

Over the past month the county has negotiated with a few companies but all of the negotiations have fallen through.

Currently the county itself is providing services at the airport, but are concerned that if they don’t find a professional FBO that the airport will begin to become a financial  drain on the county instead of the money maker that the county wants.

Last week the board opened proposals from 4 companies who would like to do the work.

The companies ranged from a local group to as far away as Tennessee, North Carolina and Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Commissioners have passed the proposals on to the Airport Advisory Committee for consideration – they will meet tonight to consider the issue.

The committee will provide a recommendation to the county commission before the county meets next week.
