Coastal Cleanup really cleaned up Franklin County's coast

Franklin County’s coastline is a lot cleaner thanks to a few hundred volunteers and a lot of work.

The annual Coastal Cleanup was held last Saturday removing nearly 4 toms of trash and debris from the local waterfront.

Nearly 1500 pounds of trash was picked up from the Carrabelle River and Carrabelle Beach and another 1100 pounds of trash was picked up from the St. George Island Lighthouse Park area.

About 1100 pounds was picked up at two locations in Eastpoint and about the same amount was picked up from two locations in Apalachicola.

80 pounds of trash was picked up at Bald Point State Park and about 160 pounds was removed from the shoreline at Lanark Village.

The trash included 319 bags of cans, bottles, Styrofoam, ropes, building materials, car parts, and all manner of other litter.

Volunteers also picked up 15 tires, 2 TVs, 2 derelict boats, a boat propeller, a catamaran pontoon, a propane tank, a rug, a hot tub cover, and a mud flap from a Sioux City semi.
