The
state of Florida is appealing a decision by the
federal government to not declare Florida a major disaster after Hurricane
Isaac.
Governor Rick Scott made the initial disaster
request after the storm impacted the southern portion of Florida and then moved toward the panhandle
before making landfall in Louisiana .
The initial disaster request included 7 counties
which suffered over 26 million dollars in damages because of the storm; the
threshold for a major disaster declaration is 25 million dollars.
In the appeal, the governor added three additional
counties, including Franklin County which suffered nearly 140 thousand
dollars in damages because of the storm.
The disaster designation request is now for ten
Florida counties, and nearly 36 million dollars in total damages.
In a letter to the Division of Emergency
Management the governor says the declaration is needed to ensure Florida communities have the
full capability to recover from Isaac’s damage.
