That contract allows Waste Management to transport local
solid waste out of the county for disposal.
Waste Management has operated the service for the past 15
years – the extension would allow them to continue for another 5.
Commissioners said there are some issues they would like to
hash out first.
Commissioner Cheryl Sanders said she has received some complaints
about the transfer station not being open during posted times which has caused
some problems for local garbage companies.
The board is also concerned that because of recent increases
in tipping fees that the county is not earning enough money from the service.
The board has asked Solid waste Director Fonda Davis to
begin the negotiations and if he can reach an agreement with Waste Management to then open the
service up for bids from other companies.
