Franklin County joins with Workforce board to provide jobs to seafood workers

Franklin County officials and the Gulf Coast workforce board have signed an agreement that will make some temporary jobs available to Franklin county residents who are being impacted by the poor oyster crops in the Apalachicola Bay.

The County Commission on Tuesday entered into an agreement with the workforce board that will provide 15 temporary jobs cleaning up debris that was left by Tropical Storm Debby.

The jobs will pay 10 dollars an hour and could last for up to 6 months.

The workforce board will handle the screenings and hirings and the workers will be placed either at the landfill or the county parks and recreation department to do clean-up work.

Under the program, the workers will even be able to clean some private property as long as the property qualifies.

There is also the possibility that under a separate program there could be up to 200 “work experience” jobs for local workers.

That program would be a partnership between the workforce board and private employers in which the workforce board would pay workers for job training at local businesses.

It would be funded with money from the National emergency grant.

The Workforce Board is still looking for businesses that would take part and will then begin looking for workers who could fill the positions.
