Franklin County will see a lot of road work over the next few years.

Franklin County will see a lot of road work over the next few years.

County commissioners got a look at the Department of Transportation’s 5 year work plan on Tuesday and there are some big projects on it, including the resurfacing of Highway 98 from the Gulf County line to the Apalachicola Bridge.

The 4 million dollar project is expected to begin in 2015.

South Bayshore drive in Eastpoint will also be resurfaced and widened in 2015 at a cost of 1.6 million dollars and CC Land road in Eastpoint will be widened and resurfaced from 6th street to Highway 65.

That project will cost about three quarters of a million dollars.

Widening and resurfacing Bluff Road in Apalachicola is on the list for 2013.

DOT also plans to build a bike path from the Carrabelle Bridge to the Carrabelle lighthouse in 2013 and start the planning work for a bike path at Alligator Point.

A number of bridges will also be repaired in 2013 including porter Bar creek bridge, Yent’s Bayou bridge and Turkey Bayou bridge.

County commissioners said they are glad that so much work is scheduled for the county but felt that one major project is missing and that’s resurfacing highway 98 between Eastpoint and Carrabelle.

The shoulders along that stretch of highway were recently repaired but commissioner Pinki Jackel said the roadway itself is in horrible shape.

Just two weeks ago, a large hole opened up in the westbound lane of the highway just east of Eastpoint, though it was repaired quickly.

If you would like to see the full 5 year work plan for yourself, we’ve posted a list of the projects on the news page at oysterradio.com
