County seeks extension for emergency unemployment benefits

County commissioners are hoping that the US Department of Labor will approve an extension so that local people can apply for unemployment benefits.

The board on Tuesday approved a letter to the federal agency asking for an extension of the deadline to apply for disaster unemployment assistance because of Tropical Storm Debbie.

The benefits were made available after the Tropical Storm hit Franklin County in late June, County planner Alan Pierce said the county can use the Department of Agriculture report that there are no oysters in the bay as a basis for the extension request.

Pierce said if the request is accepted local seafood workers should be able to re-apply for unemployment benefits.
