Estuary Day draws a crowd and Florida's first lady

Florida’s first lady, Ann Scott, was in Eastpoint last Friday to take part in the annual Estuaries Day celebration.

The First Lady took part in a number of events, including putting on the hermit crab hat to read the children’s book A House for Hermit Crab to local children.

The First Lady also took a tour of the reserve’s research facility on island drive.

More than 600 people turned out Friday for the event which draws attention to the importance of the water and environment in estuaries that are home to an abundance of Florida’s birds, wildlife and fish.

The Apalachicola estuary is one of the most productive and pristine estuarine systems in the northern hemisphere.

The Estuary Day celebration also included birds and animals from the Wild Mammal Association, games, touch tanks, and classes on throwing cast nets.

The research reserve also gave away about 600 T-shirts, and plenty of door prizes from local businesses.
