Congressman Southerland named to Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation


Local congressman Steve Southerland has been tapped to serve as vice chairman of the Subcommittee on Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation for the 113thCongress. 

The Subcommittee on has jurisdiction over the activities of the United States Coast Guard, including its duties, organization, functions, personnel, the Coast Guard Academy, and the Coast Guard Auxiliary. 

The Subcommittee also has jurisdiction over regulation of ocean shipping and the merchant marine, except as it relates to national security.

In a press release issued Tuesday, Congressman Southerland said  “As a member of the House Transportation Committee hailing from a state with 20 ports, I understand the importance of bolstering Coast Guard readiness and strengthening our coastal economies” adding that he looks forward to expanding his role on the maritime issues so critical to our nation’s economic competiveness."
