Don't Forget A lecture at Gulf Specimen Marine Lab

Anna White Hodges will be lecturing at Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory at 7 PM on Tuesday, January 15, 2013 in Panacea, Florida. She is a talented entertainer and a passionate advocate for the rights of commercial fishermen. During the net ban referendum in the early 1990's she traveled throughout the southeast trying to raise funds for legal fees, including performing at the Grand Ole Oprey in Nashville, paying for her expenses on the road by selling the clams she and her husband Mike Hodges grow. Anna has also recorded songs about the competition that commercial fishermen face from cheap imports and the burgeoning regulation.

'I am not as radical as I once was, but I still feel very strongly in education. With education, comes understanding and with understanding-cooperation! " Anna has presented educational programs to schools in Tennessee, Louisiana and Florida, showing children how clams are grown in hatcheries and planted in the bay and grown to harvestable size. She demonstrates her lectures showing the clam bags and equipment they use on board the vessels along with tiny seedling to full grown quahog clams.

Her talk will cover the history of aquaculture in Cedar Key, how it originally evolved from people trying to culture oysters into a full blown clam industry. While commercial fishing with nets has been in their families for generations, she and her husband have made the transition from net fishing to farming the sea and are part of the growing aquaculture industry that is coming to the Florida panhandle.

Anna White Hodge's talk will be the lecturer in Gulf Specimen Marine Laboratory's lecture series. In the past the lab has hosted scientists talking about diatoms, oil spills, marine turtles, sea grass habitats and other subjects. Anna is their first aquaculture entertainer, equipped with guitar, songs and stories. Save the date Tuesday January 15,2013 at 7 PM.

"I'm looking forward to it. We'll have a sampling of fresh steamed clams available for everyone to try!   Anna White Hodges"
