International collaboration is a key to the success of global fisheries management. The United States will soon begin consultations with 10 nations to address illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing and stem the bycatch of protected species.
Mark your calendars for May 7-9 in Washington, DC. Twice before in our history, we've pulled together fishery leaders and stakeholders from around the country to discuss U.S. fisheries management and chart a course for the future. This conference will focus on fisheries management topics like ecosystems and communities and will include a poster session. Poster proposals are due February 15, 2013.
A draft of the U.S. National Climate Assessment report is now available for public review. For more information on the potential impacts of climate change on U.S. oceans and ocean resources, including fisheries, marine protected species, habitats, and fishing communities, see Chapter 24.
NOAA Fisheries Protected Resources has received a request from NOAA's Office of Coast Survey for authorization to take small numbers of marine mammals incidental to conducting hydrographic surveys. Please comment by February 7, 2013.
Request for nominations for an appointment by the Secretary of Commerce to fill one vacancy on the Marine Fisheries Advisory Committee beginning in the spring of 2013.
Stock assessment reports for 10 marine mammals stocks in the Atlantic region have revised abundance estimates and corrections to bycatch estimates. Please comment on revised draft 2012 Stock Assessment Reports for these ten stocks by April 16, 2013.

Comment on an application from the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society for an Incidental Harassment Authorization to take marine mammals by harassment incidental to conducting aircraft operations, lighthouse renovation, and light maintenance activities on the St. George Reef Light Station in northeast Pacific Ocean during specific months of 2013. Comments due by February 7, 2013.
NOAA Fisheries received a permit application for scientific purposes to enhance the survival of a listed species under the Endangered Species Act of 1973, as amended, from the California Department of Fish and Game and PacifiCorp for a 10 year period. Comments due February 7, 2013.
Pacific Coast Groundfish Fishery - Application for an Exempted Fishing Permit
NOAA Fisheries has received exempted fishing permit applications for 2013 and 2014 and is considering issuance of exempt fishing permits for vessels participating in the Exempt Fishing Permit fisheries effective no earlier than February 11, 2013, which would expire no later than December 31, 2014. Please comment by February 11, 2013.
The California Department of Transportation received Incidental Harassment Authorization to take small numbers of California sea lions, Pacific harbor seals, harbor porpoises, and gray whales, by harassment, incidental to construction of a replacement bridge for the East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge in California.

Proposal to designate the reintroduction of a population of spring-run Chinook salmon in the San Joaquin River as "experimental." The proposed designation will provide legal protection to people who may accidentally harm these federally protected fish while the population is reintroduced. Comments due by March 4, 2013.

2013 Alaska Fisheries Science Center Seminar Series Begins
The Alaska Fisheries Science Center Seminar Series presents 10 presentations highlighting research findings from the Center's Resource Assessment and Conservation Engineeringand Resource Ecology Fishery Management Divisions. The first seminar will be January 15 and will highlight the research of the Gulf of Alaska Integrated Ecosystem Research Program.
