Florida's State Health Assessment Available for Public Comment

As part of the state health improvement planning process, the Florida Department of Health and its partners have conducted a comprehensive health assessment—a collaborative, systematic process to collect, analyze, interpret and use data to inform and mobilize communities, develop priorities, gather resources, and plan actions to improve the public’s health, culminating in theState Health Assessment report.  The report, the first of its kind in our state, provides a comprehensive view of health and quality of life in Florida
(The State Health Assessment is available at: http://www.doh.state.fl.us/Planning_eval/FloridaMAPP/SHA/index.html )
The report includes health status findings (demographic and socio-economic, health risk factors, health status, health resources availability, and community and the environment data), an assessment of the components, activities, competencies and capacities of the our public health system, an assessment of how quality of life is perceived in the state, and an assessment of the forces outside that public health system that affect the health of the population.
FL DOH staff and partners used findings from the State Health Assessment as the basis for identifying the following state health priorities:
    • Protecting Floridians from infectious and environmental threats; injuries, and man-made disasters
    • Preventing chronic disease
    • Working in communities to maximize partnerships, increase safety and increase access to physical activity
    • Improving access to care
    • Focusing on health finance and infrastructure to ensure performance management, continuous improvement, accountability and sustainability

Because it the State Health Assessment is the foundation for improving and promoting the health of Florida’s residents, the Florida Department of Health is soliciting public feedback on the report.  Once we have feedback, we will revise and publish the report.  The report will be updated every four years as part of a continuous cycle of health improvement planning.
