Franklin County commission to consider changes to MSBU on Tuesday

County Commissioners will consider a number of important issues tomorrow.

County commissioners on Tuesday will hear public input on a proposal that would allow local fire departments to levy different MSBU assessments for properties within their fire districts.

The MSBU assessments are levied on every home and business in Franklin County to help pay for fire protection.

Currently local homeowners pay 50 dollars a year for fire protection; the cost is 10 dollars for undeveloped lots and 100 dollars for most businesses.

But now the fire departments on St. George Island and Alligator Point would like to separate themselves from the county-wide assessment and charge a different rate for homeowners in their district.

County commissioners on Tuesday will also open bids from companies interested in repairing the St. George Island fishing pier that was damaged by a barge during Tropical Storm Debby last Summer.

The barge knocked out three sections of roadway, leaving a 165 foot gap that makes it impossible for people to access much of the pier.

The county is now seeking bids from companies that would replace the missing section of bridge with a 16 foot wide timber pier held up by concrete piles.

The project is expected to cost a little over 600 thousand dollars to complete.

County commissioners will also open bids on Tuesday from attorneys who would like to serve as county attorney and the commission will open bids for fire doors at Weems memorial Hospital.

If you would like to attend Tuesday’s county commission meeting it will begin at 9 Am.

The meeting will be held at the Franklin County Courthouse Annex in Apalachicola.
