Landfill proposes increased tipping fees to cover cost of transfer station

It may soon be more expensive to haul household and yard trash to the Franklin county landfill.

The county commission is considering a contract with Waste Management to operate the transfer station at the Franklin county landfill which allows them to transport municipal solid waste out of the county for disposal..

Waste Management was the only bidder for the work – their bid came in at 57 dollars and 95 cents per pound.

That’s about 10 dollars more per pound than the company is charging now and those costs will have to passed on to landfill customers.

On Tuesday solid waste director Fonda Davis asked the county to approve the contract as well as increases to the tipping fee people pay at the landfill.

The request would increase the tipping fee for household waste to 65 dollars a ton and for yard trash to 45 dollars per ton.

Commissioners tabled the issue to give county attorney Michael Shuler time to look over the contract.
