TWO APALACHICOLA NATIONAL ESTUARINE RESEARCH RESERVE STAFF NAMED DEP STARS

~ First-ever annual award provides recognition for top performing employees~

 

Coastal and Aquatic Managed Areas staff members Erik Lovestrand and Lisa Bailey have been named Florida Department of Environmental Protection Star employees for 2012.  The award, given this year for the first time ever to 125 of the Department’s highest performers around the state, recognizes staff that has shown exemplary work and dedication to the agency’s mission of environmental stewardship. Lovestrand and Bailey were honored in a reception at the R. A. Gray Building in Tallahassee on Thursday, February 21.

 

In a letter to recipients, DEP Secretary Herschel T. Vinyard, Jr. said, “Your continued focus on the preservation of the state’s environment is making a difference.” Lovestrand is an Environmental Manager with an emphasis on education at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve in Eastpoint. Bailey is an Environmental Specialist at the Reserve and assists in the education program.

 

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Coastal and Aquatic Managed Areas (CAMA) is responsible for oversight of the State’s 41 Aquatic Preserves, three National Estuarine Research Reserves, the Florida Coral Reef Conservation Program, and the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.  It is the mission of CAMA to conserve and restore Florida’s coastal resources for the benefit of people and the environment.

 

Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve is managed by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Coastal and Aquatic Managed Areas in cooperation with the NOAA. The facilities include a Nature Center, labs, and spaces for education. The Apalachicola estuary serves as an outdoor classroom and laboratory for students and scientists from around the world.
