Chilly
temperatures couldn’t keep the crowds away from St.
George Island
this weekend for the 31st annual Charity Chili Cook-off and Auction.
Nunn Better Chili out of Fort Pierce, Florida took first
place in the professional chili cook-off, earning a 500 dollar cash prize and
the opportunity to compete for 25 thousand dollars at the National chili
cook-off.
Nunn Better beat out 40 other professional chili cooks to
take the title.
2nd place and 300 dollars went to a group called
“Roadkill Hovering Harrier Chili” out of Niceville.
3rd place and 200 dollars was won by the “Three
Sheets to the wind chili” out of Panama city
beach.
The crockpot chili winner this year was Pam
Addison from St. George
Island .
The crowds might have been a little smaller than usual this
year because of the cooler temperatures, organizers said that might have
actually helped sell more chili which is good for the St. George Island fire
department and first responders unit.
Jon Grauer with Bluewater chili out of Tallahassee won the
Mister Hot Sauce title this year, he also won that title in 2010.
Katie Tyler with Burning with Both End chili out of Destin
was this year’s Miss Chili Pepper.
Bluewater chili won the people choice award, possibly because
they were selling jello shots.
Just Because chili won best booth, Toilet bowl chili won the
showmanship trophy.
You can see pictures of the winners and of the chili cookoff
on the news page at oysterradio.com or on our facebook page.
The St. George
Island Fire Department is still totaling the
amount raised over the weekend through the cookoff and the charity auction and
expect to release figures later this month.
All of the money raised on Saturday helps fund the St.
George Island
Fire Department and first responders unit – it makes up about half of their
budget.
