Florida reminds consumers of the state's lemon law

Florida’s Lemon law is turning twenty- five years old.

The Lemon Law was created to protect consumers from buying a new car that doesn’t work.

Because this is Consumer Protection Week, the state attorney generals’ office is reminding Floridians that the law exists.

Under the law, a car’s manufacturer is given a reasonable number of attempts to repair substantial defects in a motor vehicle.

If the manufacturer fails to fix the problem, they are required to buy back the defective vehicle and either pay a refund to the consumer or provide a replacement vehicle.

The law is effective for 2 years after the car is purchased.

Florida's “Lemon Law” applies to new or demonstrator vehicles sold or long-term leased in Florida. Dealers are required by law to give consumers the "Consumer Guide to the Florida Lemon Law."
