FWC DIVISION OF LAW ENFORCEMENT WEEKLY REPORT March 15 – 21, 2013

This report represents some events the FWC handled over the past week; however,
it does not include all actions taken by the Division of Law Enforcement.

NORTHWEST REGION

SANTA ROSA COUNTY

Officer Ben Pineda was on foot patrol when he discovered a freshly set blind approximately 25 yards from a feeder with corn. Fresh tracks indicated that turkeys had already discovered the corn. Early Saturday morning, Officer Pineda set up surveillance of the baited area. A hunter arrived just before daylight, entered the blind, and began calling for gobblers. Officer Pineda made contact with the hunter and cited him for attempting to take turkeys over bait.

OKALOOSA COUNTY

A commercial tug and barge struck the Brooks Bridge crossing the Intracoastal Waterway near Fort Walton Beach. The incident caused damage to the bridge fender system, freshwater supply line to Okaloosa Island, and a sewage pipe. Apparently, a crane on the barge struck the upper bridge breaching the water and sewage pipes. There were no reported injuries. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is the lead agency in the investigation. Officers Pete Rockwell and Charles Jarvis arrived to assist with security of the accident scene. All vessel traffic was closed east and westbound for ½ mile both sides of the bridge. For a brief time, Department of Transportation (DOT) closed the Brooks Bridge to all vehicle traffic, but later in the evening opened the westbound portion of the bridge. The eastbound portion remains closed. DOT is assessing damage to the bridge structure. Okaloosa County authorities are assessing electrical cable, water, and sewer pipe damage. Officer Andy Maltais and Investigator J.W. Armstrong relieved Officers Rockwell and Jarvis and assisted USCG during the late night to early morning hours maintaining the safety security zone as USCG worked the accident.
