The Florida fish and Wildlife Conservation commission is kicking off a lionfish
photo contest to draw attention to the invasive species.
Lionfish are native to the Indian and Pacific
oceans but are showing up in greater numbers in Florida waters.
Lionfish
are voracious eaters and it’s feared that they could damage native recreational
and commercial fish populations. Lionfish have red and white stripes and fanlike fins that resemble a lion's mane.
They also have a tall row of spines that you need to be careful about because they are extremely poisonous.
If you
have ever caught a lionfish or photographed one or you want to learn more about
the species, the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will hold a live
twitter chat on Thursday from 1 to 2.
The
chat will feature experts, including FWC Division of Marine
Fisheries Management biological scientist Mason Smith and public information
specialist Amanda Nalley.
During
the chat, the FWC will also unveil its “Lionfish Control Team” photo contest.
To participate, sign in to Twitter and follow@MyFWClife or #FWCLionfish.
