Golf carts now legal to drive in much of Eastpoint

Golf carts are now allowed on most of the streets in Eastpoint north of Highway 98.

On Tuesday the county commission approved the use of golf carts on county roads north of the state highway.

They are not approved for use south of the highway, or on North Bayshore Drive, because commissioners said North Bayshore is too narrow and the speed limit is to high for golf carts to be used safely.

They can, however, be driven on the multi use path which runs along North Bayshore for a short stretch from Hickory Dip road.

Golf carts do have to meet state requirements to be legal – that includes a rear view mirror, reflectors, and efficient brakes.

If they are driven at night they have to have headlights.

And not just anyone can drive a golf cart - drivers have to be at least 16 years old and have a valid driver’s license.

Now that golf carts are allowed in Eastpoint and St. George Island, county commissioners will turn their attention to whether residents of Lanark Village and Alligator Point would like to have a golf cart ordinance enacted.
