Hurricane
season starts Saturday, so now keep your ears open for Andrea, Barry,
Chantal, and Dorian.
Those
will be the first storm names used this season.
According
to hurricane experts, we could be hearing about Melissa,
Nestor, and Olga before the end of November.
The National Hurricane Center believes there could between 13 and 20 named storms this year,
with as many as 11 of them becoming full fledged hurricanes.
But
no matter how many storms there are this season, it only takes one storm to
change everything, and if you live along the coast you should be prepared.
If
you don’t know how to start preparing for a hurricane, the Tallahassee
Chapter of the Red Cross has a great website with a number of tips for
preparing for a major storm.
You
can find them at tallyredcross.org
The
site contains valuable information on planning for and surviving a hurricane,
including evacuation routes, emergency shelter locations and hurricane storm
surge maps.
It
also tells you how to make a hurricane survival kit, and what to do to protect
your home from strong winds and high water.
