Property owners on St. George Island and Alligator Point approve MSBU increase

Homeowners in the St. George Island and Alligator Point/ St. Theresa fire districts will pay higher MSBU assessments next year than homeowners in other parts of the county.

Property owners in both districts approved the increase in MSBU from 50 dollars a year to 95 dollars.

The MSBU assessments are used to pay for fire protection and first responders’ services.

The elections office sent out about 5300 ballots to property owners in the two fire districts in April, only about a quarter of them were returned.

581 St. George Island property owners agreed to the increase while 289 said no.

At Alligator Point and St. Theresa 274 homeowners said yes to the increase while 196 said no.

Homeowners in those districts will see the increase with their next tax bill.

The increase will not affect undeveloped properties which pay 10 dollars a year for fire protection and will also not affect the amount businesses in those fire districts pay.

St. George Island and Alligator Point are the first fire districts in Franklin County to seek the increase in MSBU because they have some of the tallest homes in the county which requires more expensive equipment and trucks to protect.
