NORTHWEST REGION
OKALOOSA COUNTY
Investigator J.W. Armstrong responded to a vessel accident with injuries involving a rented personal watercraft (PWC). Investigator Armstrong determined the PWC struck a channel marker as a result of a wake pushing it toward the marker. The operator and a passenger were transported to a local hospital where they were treated for minor injuries and released. Investigator Armstrong is investigating the accident.
Officer Alan Kirchinger stopped a vessel for excessive speed/wake in the idle speed/no wake zone near Destin Pass. Upon contact with the vessel operator and observing the operator attempt to retrieve safety equipment, Officer Kirchinger noticed signs of impairment. Field sobriety tasks confirmed the operator was impaired, and he was placed under arrest. The operator was transported to the Destin Coast Guard Station where he refused to submit to a certified breath test to determine his breath alcohol content. The subject was later transported and booked into the Okaloosa County Jail and charged with operating a vessel while impaired.
Officer Heath Nichols responded to a boating accident involving two vessels. A vessel that was tied to a dock was struck by another vessel that left the scene. No one observed the accident, and Officer Nichols is investigating.
