Marine Operations Manager & Diving Safety Officer 
(a Research Faculty Position)
  
The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) seeks a highly motivated and organized individual to act as marine operations manager.  This person will have oversight of all field (e.g., diving, field instrumentation, and research vessel support for both large and small vessels) and laboratory (e.g., laboratory instrumentation, chemical use) operations supporting the program-wide needs of scientists and serve as the diving safety officer consistent with the AAUS Diving Officer Competency Profile.
  
The position reports to the Director. 

QUALIFICATIONS 
   1. Minimum education - Bachelor's degree in marine or related science and at least three years or relevant experience
   2.  Certification as a diving instructor by a nationally recognized diving agency (e.g., NAUI, PADI, CMAS) and experience teaching compressed-gas diving, rescue diving and other diving experiences in an academic setting sufficient to serve as the university Diving Safety Officer; experience in diving-supervision and diving related safety.
       3.  Competence in compressed-gas technology, including repair, maintenance, and purchase of basic and advanced diving life-support and underwater-research equipment; competence in all forms of compressed gas diving used at the time of employment.
    4. Experience with the use & maintenance of large and small marine vessels sufficient to coordinate shcedules and make decisions regarding maintenance. 
    5. Demonstrated management skills & ability to supervise others.
    6. Strong communication and organizational skills, as well as ability to manage a variety of operations simultaneously, set priorities, ake decisions, provide leadership, and develop and maintain cooperative working relationships.  
    7.  Proficiency in computer applications, including excel, word, powerpoint, and others. 

DUTIES INCLUDE:
            
1.       Serving as the Dive Safety Officer and manager of the FSU Academic Diving Program

  1. 2.       Supervising  the marine technical operations staff, including the boat captain and marine technicians for small boat operations, research equipment, and science diving. 

  1. 3.       Working with the marine operations staff to procure supplies to keep vessels and shore facility stocked with inventory parts, consumable and non-consumable supply items; develop inventories, user fees, and depreciation and replacement schedules; and overseeing the scheduling and budgeting of research vessel use and maintenance.
  1. 4.  Interacting with the Chief Scientist and scientific party as needed to help carry out the sciencetific objectives of the research vessel safely and efficiently.
            5.  Occasionally participating in field work that includes deploying, downloading, and retrieving instrumentation, conducting research dives.
           6.  Other duties in support of the FSUCML mission, as needed.

Coastal & Marine Laboratory

This position is located at the FSU Coastal and Marine Laboratory in St. TeresFL, about 45 minutes from the main FSU campus in Tallahassee.

Research at the FSUCML is conducted by faculty in residence and by those from the main campus, as well as by faculty, postdoctoral, graduate, and undergraduate investigators from FSU and other universities throughout the world. We collaborate with scientists from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, NOAA Fisheries, the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge. 

The mission of the FSUCML is to conduct innovative, interdisciplinary research focused on the coastal and marine ecosystems of the northeastern Gulf of Mexico, with a focus on solving the ecological problems faced by the region by providing the scientific underpinnings for informed policy decisions.

 
Anticipated Salary Range:
Minimum salary is $39,000; the FSUCML considers hiring above the minimum based on qualifications and experience.
