St. George Island officials staying busy saving swimmers

There was another near drowning on St. George Island on Monday.

Fire chief Jay Abbott said at about 4 o’clock Monday someone from Eastpoint nearly drowned while swimming at the beach off 9th street west.

The person was face down in the water for a number of minutes before being pulled from the water and revived.

It’s the second near drowning in a week.

Abbott said that first responders on the island have had to pull 17 people from the water in the past 10 days, it’s the largest number of this type of call he’s had in such a short period of time.

One call was to rescue 8 people at one time.

There are flags at the public beach alerting swimmers to the current conditions in the water, so if you are planning to swim anywhere on the gulf side of the island it is worth a trip to the public beach to see if conditions are safe.
