Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office narcotics officers arrested a 35-year-old Crawfordville man in connection with a month long investigation into obtaining heroin and other illegal substances for distribution as contraband at a state prison, according to Sheriff Charlie Creel.
Rocky L. Butler was arrested on Tuesday, June 11 at 1 a.m. and charged with two counts of possession of a synthetic schedule 1 narcotic with intent to sell and possession of heroin with intent to sell. He also faces a charge of bribery and public order crime.
The WCSO Narcotics Unit joined forces with the United States Postal Service, Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) and Florida Department of Corrections (DOC)/Office of Inspector General during the investigation.
The investigation revealed that Butler received packages containing Spice, rolling papers and smoking apparatus. In addition, a substance believed to be “bath salts” and 24 baggies that contained a substance believed to be heroin was seized. An envelope containing $325 was also confiscated.
The Spice and Bath Salts were seized and sent to an FDLE laboratory for analysis. The lab analysis later confirmed the presence of the schedule 1 narcotics. The heroin had an estimated street value of $4,000.
DOC and FDLE conducted an investigation into Butler being suspected of bringing the contraband into Wakulla Correctional Institution. The contraband was to be delivered to certain WCI inmates in exchange for cash payments. During an interview, Butler admitted to bringing contraband into WCI on numerous occasions.
Butler was arrested at his home and was transported to the Wakulla County Jail without incident where he remains under a $35,000 bond.
