Franklin county adopts changes to federal flood insurance program

Franklin county has approved changes that will take effect next year in the National Flood Insurance Program.

The county has to participate in the program in order to be eligible for federal flood insurance.

The federal flood insurance program is undergoing two major changes.

One is that the federal program is redrawing its flood maps and in many cases raising the base flood elevations.

The program is also changing its rates.

The rate changes are being dictated by the federal government.

The Alligator Point Taxpayers Association did raise some concerns about how the changes will impact the resale value of existing homes – though it was pointed out that the county has no say in changes to the flood insurance maps.

County administrative director Alan Pierce said the changes could have a number of impacts that the county is not even aware of yet.

One change that will happen is the county will have to begin issuing flood plain management permits which they have never done before.

Those permits will cost an additional 50 dollars and require two inspections for homes built in high hazard flood zones.
