Southern Foodways Alliance offers oral histories of Apalachicola Bay seafood industry

If you would like to hear some of the history of the local seafood industry as told by people who lived it, you should check out the Southern Foodways Alliance website.

The Southern Foodways Alliance is a group dedicated to studying and preserving southern food culture.

They do that in a number of ways including documentary films, food symposiums, and through the oral history program.

In 2005 and 2006 the Southern Foodways Alliance gathered oral histories from people who work on Apalachicola Bay to document the history of our area and the seafood industry.

What you will find on-line are 25 short interviews with pictures documenting the various sections of the local seafood industry.

A number of familiar names are there including Bobby Shiver talking about boat building, Corky Richards discusses tong making, Tommy Ward talks about oyster leases and George Watkins talking about beekeeping,.

You can find the oral histories on-line at southernfoodways.com.
