25 volunteers help Caitlin clean the beach

About 25 people turned out last week to take part in Caitlin’s 3rd annual beach cleanup.

The event is the brainchild of Caitlin Smith who was 11 when she decided cleaning the beach would be a good way to protect local marine life and make the beach prettier for visitors by removing empty bottles, broken glass, and cigarette butts.

This year 25 volunteers joined in to help her and they picked up nearly 300 pounds of trash from the beach, Lighthouse Park, Pine Street, Island Drive, and the south side of the bridge.

That’s about 150 pounds less than last year, but Smith said she thinks that’s a good thing because it means people are cleaning up their own trash.
