Air Force considering using Tate's Hell as training area

The Air Force is considering establishing helicopter landing and drop zones, airstrips, and a number of different landing and air training activities in Blackwater River State Forest and Tate’s Hell State Forest.

The county learned of the plans this week.

The Air Force says the action is needed because restricted areas over Eglin Air Force Base are creating scheduling conflicts with nonhazardous training.
The air force has a Memorandum of Understanding with the state that allows for military training missions in the Tate’s hell State Forest and portions of Blackwater River State Forest.
It also allows for communications equipment, known as threat emitters, to be deployed.
No live ammunition can be fired on state land under the agreement.
There will be a public meeting on Thursday, August 29 at the Apalachicola Community Center for anyone seeking more information on the Air Force plans.

That meeting will start at 6 PM.
