Now that the Bay City work camp is
closing, the county commission says it would like to get the property back.
The
20 year old work camp is in the process of closing and moving its prisoners to
other facilities – most will go to the new work camp at the state prison in
Carrabelle.
The facility houses over 250 inmates and
has about 70 employees.
The
deed for the Work Camp property has a reverter clause that will return the
nearly 40 acres to the county when the closure is complete.
If
the county does not want the land the state Division of State Lands would
consider the land “surplus” and would likely sell the property.
Commissioners
agreed Tuesday that they do want the land, though at this point they aren’t
sure what they will do with it.
They
discussed trying to reopen the facility for juvenile offenders, but decided
they would seek proposals from anyone who might have a use for the land.
Commissioners
said they would like to get the property leased as quickly as possible so that
the facility doesn’t deteriorate from disuse.
The
transfer of ownership should happen in the next 60 days.
