Franklin county is world-famous because of prison-snafu

Forged documents led to the release of two convicted murderers from the Franklin Correctional Institution in Carrabelle over the past 3 weeks.

Charles Walker and Joseph Jenkins, both 34, were serving life sentences in separate murder cases.

Jenkins was convicted in a 1998 murder and armed robbery; he was freed the local prison on September the 27th.

Walker was convicted for a 1999 murder and was freed on October 8th.

According to authorities, the men were freed based on falsified documents that had apparently come from the Orange County Clerk of Court.

How that happened and who was involved is still under investigation.

The Department of Corrections says it is also investigating whether any other prisoners in the state were released because of falsified documents.

The mistake wasn't caught until October 15th at which point the sheriff’s office in Orange County was notified of the issue since both men come from the Orlando area.

There was no attempt made to alert citizens in Franklin County to any potential danger even though both men were released here.

Officials do believe that at least one of the prisoners, and maybe both, have returned to Orange County.
