The board agreed this week to start the planning for a
number of improvements for the 109 year old building which will one day serve
as a convention center for the county.
The next major projects scheduled for
the armory include the installation an air-conditioning system and completely
renovating the armory’s kitchen.
The building also has to be made
handicapped accessible to comply with federal rules which will require work on
the entrance and refitting the bathrooms.
The county just finished spending
about 230 thousand dollars for a new roof.
The architect on the project said
work could be ready to bid out in the next 3 months.
The funding for the work is coming
primarily from the Tourist Development Council.
The TDC has nearly a half million
dollars to spend on the work over the next year.
There will still be plenty left to do
even after these larger projects are complete.
The architect said the windows will
have to be replaced or repaired and the armory will need a lot of general
maintenance work.
