Start the New year in the Apalachicola National forest

The Apalachicola National Forest is hosting a New Year’s Day walk into Bradwell Bay Wilderness to kick off the 2014 celebration of the Wilderness Act.

Wilderness and Recreation Planner Haven Cook will be leading the three-mile interpretive walk on the Florida National Scenic Trail, which runs through the wilderness.
Space is limited to 20 people and registration is required.
The group will gather at Hudson Park across from the Sonic Drive-In on Highway 319 in Crawfordville on Wednesday, Jan. 1st and caravan to the Florida National Scenic Trailhead on Forest Road 329.
To register for the event or for more information, contact Recreation Program Manager Chandra Roberts at 850-926-3561, ext. 6509
The Wilderness Act, which was signed into law in 1964, set aside an initial 9.1 million acres of wildlands for the use and benefit of the American people.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of this historic legislation.

To celebrate, the National Forests in Florida has planned several events throughout 2014, which include interpretive hikes through selected wilderness areas, presentations and wilderness film festivals scheduled throughout the state.
