Patrol, Protect, Preserve
NORTHWEST REGION
BAY COUNTY
Lieutenant Chesser and Officer Basford were on patrol in Warren Bayou when they observed a subject reach into his livewell to retrieve and then dump two spotted sea trout overboard. At first, the fisherman said he just wanted to take pictures of the two fish, but later admitted to keeping two to take home. A citation was issued for taking spotted sea trout in a prohibited area.
JACKSON COUNTY
Officer Cassels and Lieutenant Clements worked night-hunting activity near some farm fields. Shortly before midnight, a car passed their location and the driver began spotlighting the farm field. Almost immediately, the passenger began spotlighting the fields on the opposite side of the road. The subjects were followed for approximately two and one-half miles while being observed spotlighting several other fields and wooded areas. A traffic stop was conducted and a subsequent search of the vehicle and occupants revealed three firearms, one of which was a .270 caliber scoped rifle. The passenger was trying to conceal the rifle between her and the door with a jacket. Both subjects admitted to spotlighting the areas in an attempt to locate deer. Citations for attempting to take deer at night were issued to the occupants.
LIBERTY COUNTY
Officer Mims was on early morning patrol in the Apalachicola National Forest when he stopped a vehicle for working a light, two hours before sunrise. The suspect had a loaded .30-06 on the seat of the vehicle he was occupying. The subject was cited for attempting to take deer with a gun and light.
OKALOOSA COUNTY
Lieutenant Hollinhead tracked a subject in a wooded area on Blackwater Wildlife Management Area (WMA) after hearing a rifle shot. The subject was later observed not wearing hunter orange and carrying a small deer which he concealed prior to returning to his vehicle. An inspection of the deer revealed it was a small, illegal buck. The subject was cited for taking an antlerless deer and failure to wear required hunter orange while hunting on public land.
WASHINGTON COUNTY
Officer Hutchinson responded to a complaint of an illegally killed doe deer in the Chipley area. When he arrived at the residence, Officer Hutchinson located the subject with a cooler of freshly cleaned deer meat. The subject then led Officer Hutchinson to the discarded carcass of a button buck he had killed earlier in the day. A citation was issued for taking antlerless deer during the closed season.
COP (Community Oriented Policing)
Officers Hoomes, Johnson, Murphy, Reserve Officer Wise and Captain Sumner, together with FWC staff from the Divisions of Habitat and Species and Freshwater Fisheries, worked the first weekend of the annual Mobility Impaired Hunt in the Hutton Unit of the Blackwater WMA.
