The plan included 10 slips and 6
finger piers as well as a 1000 square foot building for a manager’s office,
restroom facilities and 15 parking spaces but would not provide fuel.
The project required a special
exception from the county because it would have been built on property zoned
for commercial seafood businesses at the east end of the Eastpoint breakwater,
just east of Barber’s Seafood.
The marina would have been over a
mile from the closest oyster bar.
The project was opposed by three
commissioners – Commissioner Smokey Parrish said he was concerned that if this
project were approved that any future marina construction on the Eastpoint
waterfront could require the closing of some oyster bars.
Commission chairperson Cheryl
sanders said she did not want to see piecemeal development but would instead
prefer a broader vision for the Eastpoint waterfront before approving new
projects.
