Patrol, Protect, Preserve
NORTHWEST REGION
BAY COUNTY
Officers Brady, Wicker, Basford, and Goodwin worked a replica deer detail. Two subjects passed the replica two times and illuminated it with a light. On the second pass, they shot the replica and were issued citations for attempting to take deer at night, shooting from a roadway, and having open containers in the vehicle. The weapon was seized. The duo said they saw the deer earlier as they headed to buy some beer and decided if the deer was still there on their way back they would shoot it.
SANTA ROSA COUNTY
Lieutenant Hollinhead and Officers Rockwell, Jarvis, Miller, and Jones worked a detail targeting illegal hunting from roadways and closed areas in one of the wildlife management areas. During their surveillance, an individual was observed shooting from a paved roadway and into a closed area. He was apprehended and Officer Jones issued a notice to appear on two misdemeanor charges. His hunting permit was suspended for three years.
Officers Jones and Miller found several garbage bags and an old mattress that had been discarded illegally on Eglin WMA. The bags had been opened by animals and the contents scattered about. After an investigation, the officers were able to locate the source of the violation. The officers went to the address and spoke to the resident who confirmed that the trash had come from his home. He said that he had instructed his teenage son to dispose of it in a dumpster. When the son was shown the photos of the trash, he admitted to placing it in the woods. He was issued a notice to appear in juvenile court for the misdemeanor violation.
COPS (Community Oriented Policing)
Officers Hoomes, Johnson, Murphy, Reserve Officer Wise and Captain Sumner, together with FWC staff from the Divisions of Habitat and Species and Freshwater Fisheries, worked the second weekend of the annual Mobility Impaired Hunt in the Hutton Unit of the Blackwater WMA. The officers teamed with staff from the other divisions to provide the hunters with a meal each day; assist with tracking down, retrieving, and cleaning deer; and assisted the hunters in enjoying a safe, quality hunting experience. During the second weekend, 28 hunters and their hunt assistants participated and harvested a total of 18 deer (16 antlerless and two antlered).
