Franklin County's major crime rate fell 25 percent in 2013

Franklin County’s major crime rate dropped by over 25 percent last year according to the state’s annual crime report released this week by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The report includes crimes like murder, rape and aggravated assaults reported by city and county law enforcement from January through December.

State data shows that there were 230 major criminal offenses in Franklin County last year, down from 317 in 2012.

There were no murders in Franklin County last year; there was one the year before.

The number of forcible rapes fell substantially from 16 to 5; the number of aggravated assaults also fell from 74 to 25.

The number of larcenies also fell from 130 to 93.

Not all crime numbers fell.

There were 4 robberies in Franklin county last year, up from 1 in 2012; the number of burglaries also increased slightly from 84 to 89.

There were 14 motor vehicle thefts last year, up from 11 the year before.

Local law enforcement was able to solve more cases last year.

About 46 percent of local crimes were cleared in 2013, up from about 38 percent a year earlier.

The crime rate in Gulf County rose by over 30 percent last year.

There were 444 major crimes reported in Gulf County last year up from 336 the year before.

Wakulla county saw an 18 percent drop in crime; Liberty County’s crime rate fell by nearly 7 percent.
