Over 34 million dollars is now available to Florida for
conservation efforts along the gulf coast.
The
funding is part of the settlement between the U.S. Department of Justice and BP
and Transocean to resolve certain criminal charges against both companies in
relation to the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Over
5 years the funding in the program will top 350 million dollars.
The
9 projects funded in Florida are primarily to assist areas west of us that were
hit harder by the oil spill, but a few of the projects could help our area
including a continuing study on the recovery of fish stocks in the Gulf after
the oil disaster.
Money will also be used to help the Florida
Shorebird Alliance enhance shorebird and seabird populations along the Florida
Gulf Coast.
That project would be funded for two years and
would help protect nesting areas to educate the public about the importance of
seabird nesting sites.
