The commercial blue crab fishery
closure in our area ended early.
Commercial blue crab traps from
Franklin County to the Alabama border were supposed to be out of the water
through this Wednesday to give officials time to remove lost and abandoned crab
traps but the closure needed on Saturday.
Officials said the closure ended
early because they finished their clean-up efforts more quickly than
anticipated.
Abandoned crab traps present
problems as they can continue to trap crabs and fish when they are not
maintained.
They can also damage sensitive
habitats and pose navigational hazards to boaters.
The next blue crab closure in our area will be
July 20th through the 29th and reach from Wakulla County
to Hernando county.
