Franklin County says it will stop running the local youth
football program beginning this year.
Youth football is the only local sports program that is run
through the county.
Other sports like baseball and soccer are managed by parents
and local volunteers.
The county said that parents should begin to run the football
program too – which includes collecting money and fees and purchasing equipment.
The county will give the league all of the equipment it
already has – and will continue to store the equipment in the off-season.
The county will also continue to construct and maintain the
sports facilities which it does for all youth sports.
County administrative director Alan Pierce said there is
still 9 months before the youth football season begins so the group should have
plenty of time to prepare for the change.
Commissioner Pinki Jackel said she wants the county to send
a clear message that the county is not abandoning the football program but they
want the league to move to an organization type like the local baseball and
soccer program have.
